Getting Fit Again

Andrea December 27th, 2008

This year (at my request) my parents bought me a membership at a local gym for Xmas. I had checked out Fitworks about two months ago, and liked the group fitness workouts, equipment and childcare. So, today I signed up, gave them money, and later that day, attended a spinning class (intense cycling on stationary bikes, if you’re not familiar with it).

I survived the class just fine, but there’s no doubt my legs won’t thank me tomorrow :-)

The spinning room was interesting . . . During the workout, they turn off the normal lights and turn on black light fluorescents. Everything that’s white stands out, like socks, t-shirts, the paint on the walls, etc.. The walls are painted with black, skyscraper city outlines, so that you see little white boxes shining against black, below a sky lite by city lights. Kinda surreal, but okay. (What I like are the multiple ceiling fans blasting above . . .)

I’ll do the spinning classes for a couple of weeks, and then begin lifting weights. I’ve also got two meetings with a personal trainer, as part of the membership. The first is an evaluation and the second is going through the workout they designed for you. I’ll probably do that, before I begin lifting weights, in order to get the most out of the gym.

I will be pretty sore for a few weeks *wry smile.* And sitting down and working at my computer will be much easier, too! And on the weekends I’ll get out and hike a couple of hours with Jim . .

Hiking outside with kids, Selling on Craigslist

Andrea October 22nd, 2008

Matt and I spent all of last summer together, when his brother Nick was in China with their Dad. My quandary was how to find the time to stay fit, while working and driving back and forth to preschool. I didn’t want to spend the money on a fitness membership and I wanted to workout, outside. 1

After doing some research, I got a Sherpani Backpack at Benchmark Outfitters in Cincinnati. I took Matt up to the store and tried it on, with Matt in the back. He adored it. We spent the summer hiking in Ault Park and Mount Airy. Both of us had a ball and I got quite fit, carrying a 40 lb four year old :-)

Fast forward a couple of months.

Matt’s grown two inches, and Nick’s back from China. Now I take both boys hiking every weekend and Matt hikes on his own two feet. And there’s no way that he’ll fit in that backpack next summer.

So, for the first time, I advertised on Craigslist. I posted the ad for the backpack two days ago, selecting my home town Cincinnati, Ohio and I put the backpack under “kid’s stuff” category. I got a response from a local family about a day later. We negotiated a price and the Mom is coming over Friday morning to try it out with her two girls.

How cool is that? I am pleased that Matt enjoyed the backpack last summer and now (hopefully) another family will benefit from this great “kid carrying” pack too! And no, the cash won’t hurt either *grin.*

And the process of selling an item like this, is a farrrr cry from putting the advertisement in the newspaper :-)

Busy with boys, weekend

Andrea October 18th, 2008

This weekend, I am busy with Matt and Nick. We’re hiking, going to the playground, washing the floor in their room, and baking “Boston” bread. Oh, and we’re also carving pumpkins.

Tom (their Dad), gave me their Halloween costumes when I picked them up on Friday. Nick will be a wizard and Matt, a fireman :-) I am very much looking forward to trick or treating with them around the neighborhood, on Halloween.

Hmm . . .Maybe I’ll bake pumpkin seeds too.

I adore fall, it’s my favorite time of year.

What are your favorite things to do in the fall? Mine include hiking, making comfort foods (like bread, stew and roasted vegetables), and playing in the leaves.

Playing Ultiimate Frisbee

Andrea October 17th, 2008

Last weekend, when Jim and I were in St. Louis, he gave me a tour of his alma mater, Washington University of St. Louis. As we walked around the gorgeous tree lined campus, I noticed a bunch of students playing ultimate frisbee, which I had played in college. Jim’s comment “You should do that in Cincinnati, it suits you” was dead on, so after we came home, I looked on-line for some groups.

I found a web site for Cincinnati Ultimate Frisbee groups and leagues, who play throughout the year, including winter indoor games. So last night, I played “pick-up” ultimate at a nearby park, with a group who meet Thursday evenings. Unfortunately this was their last game of the year because of shortened daylight hours. But I had a great time playing, getting to know a few players and asking questions about the winter leagues. This group starts up again in April, so hopefully I’ll get to play with them again.

Needless to say, I was a bit sore this morning after running around a field chasing a frisbee and guarding players on the other team, for 1.5 hours :-)

Andrea October 3rd, 2008

A couple of days ago, I finally joined Twitter . . . I’ve been posting entries off and on, and reading the entries of those I chose to follow.

This is an interesting tool for “world of mouth” (or ‘net”) marketing, I suspect.

If you’re curious, read my profile at: http://twitter.com/AndreaDTTP. I’ve added my Twitter posts to my business blog, http://www.sharpeningmymarketingedge.com too.

Starting The day: Morning Hike

Andrea August 29th, 2008

This morning I walked out of the house around 6:40 am, with my hiking stuff in hand. Getting into my car, I drove to a nearby park, laced on my hiking boots, slung on my lb backpack, put my hiking poles on each hand, and began hiking.

This fall, I am hiking solo for a week, southbound, on part of the Appalachian trail. I jokingly call it my “introvert” vacation, but that’s not far from the truth. The hiking is my training and preparation for that journey in the wilderness.

This morning was humid, quiet and serene. I could hear the hum of construction equipment occasionally behind the crackle, rattle and tunes of squirrels, birds, and bugs. And of course the sounds of my crunching footsteps, my poles popping into the ground one by one . . . And my heavy breathing as I pushed up angled paths. The park trails meander throughout the forest, along the bottom of a small valley, up and and down the angled sides and along the ridges on top.

I hiked for a little over an hour and a half. During that time, I saw just one trail runner, and we both smiled as we exchanged “good mornings. On that same trail, I abruptly halted at the sight of a small, cute, turtle staring at me from the center of the path. Maybe 10 inches long, with a brown shell and mottled green skin and head, his head defensively tucked in when I sat down (a bit loudly due to the weight of my pack) and took a few photos. Then I moved him safely off the trail, before continuing on . . .

Curious Cooks, Mom & Son

Andrea August 27th, 2008

My partner Jim gave me a great cookbook for my birthday, How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bitman. I had first gotten the book from the library and after renewing it three times, finally let them have it back :-)

So now I have one of my very own, which makes me quite happy.

Mark Bitman included every vegetable existing anywhere in some grocery store in the US. And he provides easy, delicious ways to prepare said vegetables. So this morning I proposed an idea to my 7 year old son Nick, which we’ll start next week. Each week, we’ll pick a vegetable or fruit which neither of us have eaten before, find it (hopefully) and cook it together. Nick is a pretty curious eater, and he also enjoys cooking, so this will be fun.

(And no, I didn’t require him to eat all, or even part of it, just a bite or two . . .*grin.*)

Client Influences

Andrea August 25th, 2008

Nothing like working with business coaches, to keep you thinking. And yes, many of my clients are some kind of “businesssy” coach, career coach, executive coach, business coach, etc.

I thoroughly enjoy working with them for many reasons. One of which is that it pushes MY envelope. The two Jim(s) (the coaches, not the partner), Julie, or Dawn, may mention a new book, ask me to write copy about what they do, or we brainstorming new product and service ideas. And it makes me think, and write and think.

One coach lent me the book “The Secrets of Six Figure Women.” And I’ve begun reading it.

Wooof! It’s intense and extremely telling information. I adore the book and am slowly working my way through it. Thanks Julie!!

A couple of coaches mentioned Dave Allen, the all knowing Guru/Master of Getting Things Done. So, time-challenged me scanned through his book “Getting Things Done” at the bookstore yesterday. Today I am reading the first chapter. Thank you Jim C. and Jim S.!

(And let me note upfront that my About page, confesses, uh says that I am a self-help sucker . . )

Maybe some consultants think they need to “know it all.” But I don’t see the point in working with a client, if they can’t teach me something too :-)

Giving in . . .

Andrea August 22nd, 2008

This morning, as I was woke up, I thought . . .

Something sweet with my morning coffee sounds reeeeeelllly good right now.

After getting ready, I headed out the door to Awakenings in Hyde Park to satisfy my cravings. In my mind sat the image of the counter next to the cash register, full of wonderful pastries from a local company.

As I walked into the cafe, I abruptly attempted to convince myself that vanilla syrup in a latte would “do the trick” just fine without so many calories. And then I saw those chocolate croissants, and thought “The hell with it” and got one, along with a vanilla latte.

Yummm . . . .
